Laser Diameter Measuring Device
Description
Performance & Advantages

Laser Diameter Measuring Device Key Functions
Dimensional Accuracy Control
Continuously monitors the pipe's outer diameter and ovality, ensuring compliance with national standards and customer specifications.
Material Savings
Uses closed-loop control to hold dimensions at the lower tolerance limit, preventing overuse of raw material.
Scrap Reduction
Detects dimensional deviations immediately and triggers alarms, helping to avoid the production of non-conforming batches.
Classification

Laser Scanning Diameter Gauge
- Principle: A rotating optical screen scans the object; the system calculates the diameter from the time the laser beam is blocked by the object.
- Features: Non-contact measurement with micron-level accuracy and fast response, well suited for high-speed production lines. Bi-directional models measure outer diameter and out-of-roundness simultaneously in both X and Y axes, overcoming the limitation of single-axis gauges that cannot detect ovality.
- Suitable diameters: Small to medium sizes.
Optical (CCD) Diameter Gauge
- Principle: Uses a telecentric optical system and line-scan CCD imaging. A collimated light beam passes through the receiving lens and forms an electronic image on the CCD array. The outer diameter is calculated by measuring how the pipe edges block the light.
- Features: No moving parts, so there is no wear-related error. Easy maintenance and excellent long-term stability. The collimated light method greatly reduces errors from lateral movement, making it particularly advantageous for measuring fast-moving objects.
- Suitable diameters: Works for diameters from 0.1 mm upward.
Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge
- Principle: Based on ultrasonic pulse reflection. A probe sends out pulses that reflect off the pipe wall surface; the wall thickness is determined by calculating the time-of-flight difference. For small-diameter pipes, high-frequency focused immersion probes are often used to concentrate the sound into a narrow beam, effectively transmitting acoustic energy into the pipe wall.
- Features: Non-contact, high-accuracy, real-time in-line wall thickness monitoring.
- Applications: In-line wall thickness inspection for metal and plastic pipes (e.g., PVC, PE), as well as corrosion monitoring on oil and gas pipelines.

FAQ
Q: 1. How does a laser diameter gauge reduce material consumption?
A: 1. The laser diameter gauge continuously measures the pipe's outer diameter in real time and automatically detects dimensional deviations during production. When integrated with the extrusion control system, it helps maintain pipe dimensions closer to the target value and lower tolerance limits, preventing unnecessary over-extrusion and excessive wall thickness. This allows manufacturers to reduce raw material consumption while ensuring compliance with product specifications.
Q: 2. Can the system be installed on existing extrusion lines?
A:2. Yes. The laser diameter measuring system can be installed on both new and existing pipe extrusion lines. It can operate as a standalone monitoring device or be integrated with the extrusion control system to provide closed-loop process control.
Q:3. Is it suitable for HDPE, PVC, and PPR pipes?
A: 3. Yes. The system is suitable for a wide range of plastic pipe production applications, including:
HDPE water and gas pipes
PVC pressure and drainage pipes
PPR pipes
PE-RT pipes
Multilayer composite pipes
Corrugated pipes
It can be used across various pipe sizes and production speeds to ensure consistent dimensional accuracy throughout the manufacturing process.
Q: 4. What pipe sizes can be measured?
A: 4. JWELL offers different laser diameter measurement solutions for various pipe diameter ranges, from small-diameter precision tubing to large-diameter HDPE and PVC pipes. Our engineers can recommend the appropriate measuring system based on your pipe dimensions and production requirements.
